Antique French 19th century mantel clock in the manner of Boulle.
This antique Boulle clock features a white enamel face with Arabic numbers and floral detailing. The main body of the clock features gold gilding and a beautifully detailed floral/leaf based design.
The inside of the clock is inscribed ‘made in France.’ (See picture in gallery).
This stylish and regal Boulle mantel clock is in mostly good, unrestored condition. Two of the feet are loose at the back and so is the top piece of the main body of the clock. We have not tested if the clock works.
History: Cabinetmaker To The King 1642-1732. Lauded by Colbert as “the most skilled craftsman in his profession,” Boulle was a virtuoso in the art of furniture creation during the 17th and 18th centuries in France. His masterful union of bronze and marquetry set the gold standard for cabinetmaking of his era. More than a mere craftsman, Boulle was an architect of opulence and flair. His intricate, lavish pieces significantly contributed to the splendor for which Versailles became renowned. In essence, Boulle was not just a cabinetmaker; he was an artist, a visionary whose legacy lives on in the annals of French furniture design.
In 1672, Boulle commenced a prolific period of crafting exceptional furniture pieces (including Boulle clocks) for Louis XIV, his royal family, and the Court, cementing his legacy in the annals of design history. While he did not invent the art of marquetry, Boulle took it to unparalleled heights. This led to the birth of the eponymous “Boulle Marquetry”—a masterful interplay of copper and tortoiseshell that turned ordinary furniture into works of art. This unique technique involves meticulously cutting a singular design from both copper and tortoiseshell, resulting in two distinct but complementary panels: the “part” and the “counterpart.” The former showcases intricate copper designs set against a tortoiseshell backdrop, while the latter reverses the tableau.
Between 1684 and 1692, this craft reached a crescendo when the Grand Dauphin commissioned both the panelling and the parquet flooring of his cabinet in Versailles, all crafted in the signature Boulle Marquetry. Though time was unkind and these historic pieces were lost during the 18th century, the technique’s allure and Boulle’s mastery have proven indelible, continuing to captivate admirers and practitioners alike.
Condition: Good, untested
Working: Unsure
Date: Early 19th century
Alongside this beautiful Boulle clock, we are also currently in possession of an antique 18th century Queen Anne Daybed that is really quite spectular.
